The City of Brotherly Love, Tony Luke’s cheesesteaks, Rita’s, Tastykakes and soft pretzels uses a few words like that out-of-towners will never understand.

1. Eagles

Non-Philly definition: America’s symbol of Pride and Freedom.
Philly definition: Our favorite football team.

2. Wawa

Non-Philly definition: A toddler asking for water.
Philly definition: Where we go for Coffee, Hoagie Fest and Gas.

3. Phillies

Non-Philly definition: Cheap cigars used for smoking or emptying and filling with something else.
Philly definition: Our favorite baseball team, Citizen’s Bank park and the Phillie Phanatic.

4. Cheesesteak

Non-Philly definition: A whole steak with cheese on it.
Philly definition: The best sandwich in Philly made with thin chopped rib-eye steak, topped with wiz and fried onions on an Italian roll prepared, served and eaten at Tony Luke’s.

5. Wiz

Non-Philly definition: A childish way of saying “to urinate.”
Philly definition: A quick way of ordering cheese whiz on top of a Tony Luke’s Philly cheesesteak.

6. Wit

Non-Philly definition: Mental sharpness.
Philly definition: A simple way of ordering sautéed onions on top of a Tony Luke’s cheesesteak, the local pronunciation of “with.”

7. Youse

Non-Philly definition: take, hold, or deploy (something) as a means of accomplishing a purpose or achieving a result; employ, spelled “use.”
Philly definition: How we refer to everyone else other than ourselves

8. Scrapple

Non-Philly definition: Misspelling of the board game using plasic tiles and involving words.
Philly definition: What we eat for breakfast.

9. Water Ice

Non-Philly definition: Two different physical stages of H2O.
Philly definition: Rita’s

10. Beer Distributor

Non-Philly definition: Someone that takes beer to all of the bars and liquor stores around the country.
Philly definition: Where we buy beer.

11. Rocky

Non-Philly definition: A place with a lot of rocks.
Philly definition: Yo’ Adrian!

12. Jersey Shore

Non-Philly definition: The land of Guidos made famous by MTV’s show of the same title.
Philly definition: Where we go for summer vacation.

13. Flyers

Non-Philly definition: Cheap promotional signs often hung or handed out
Philly definition: Our favorie Hockey Team, “Let’s go Flyers”!

14. Mummer

Non-Philly definition: Someone who is an expert planter of mums.
Philly definition: Who we go to see on New Years Day in South Philly.

15. Mutter

Non-Philly definition: To speak quietly making it difficult for others to hear what was said.
Philly definition: A cool place Downtown to see dead stuff.

16. CHOP

Non-Philly definition: To cut or slice something, often wood for kindling or onions for cheesesteaks.
Philly definition: The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

17. Penn

Non-Philly definition: A writing utensil that’s much more permanent than a pencil.
Philly definition: The University of Pennsylvania, a cool place to hang, go to bars and meet girls.

18.Jawn

Non-Philly definition: A toilet, spelled “john.”
Philly definition: Thing

19. Badlands

Non-Philly definition: National park in South Dakota full of awesome rocks.
Philly definition: A part of North Philly.

20. Jimmies

Non-Philly definition: A group of men who all happened to be named Jimmy (a casual way to refer to a group of men all named Jonathan).
Philly definition: Sprinkles on top of Rita’s Frozen Custard.

21. Roots

Non-Philly definition: The part of a plant that’s hidden underground essential for collecting nutrients.
Philly definition: ?uestlove, “The Seed” and “The Fire”, Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

22. Frazier

Non-Philly definition: A popular show from the 90’s starring Kelsey Grammer.
Philly definition: Smokin’ Joe Frazier, 32 Wins (27 KO’s), 4 Losses, 1 Draw

23. Sub

Non-Philly definition: A sandwich loaded with Italian meats and cheese.
Philly definition: … Oh, you mean a Hoagie?

24. Gravy

Non-Philly definition: A thick breakfast condiment made with meat juice and a thickening agent.
Philly definition: What we cover Spaghetti with.

25. Philly

Non-Philly definition: A young female horse too young to be a mare.
Philly definition: The best city in America, home to Rocky, Tony Luke’s cheesesteaks, Rita’s, Tastykakes, soft pretzels and everything else that is better that the rest of the country.
